A few yards away, at the bottom edge of the house garden, Herb and Ben Baumgartner had dug in a potter’s kiln.
By the end of the day they were stoking it more or less continuously and it was a toasty warm 2160 degrees inside.
In between feeding the roaring beast, Herb stopped to throw a few pieces on his wheel and answer questions…
Which is when I learned that this is called a “groundhog kiln,” that this was his first demo weekend as an exhibitor, that most of the clay he’s working with was dug on Barrington Farm, and several other minor things about how potters do their thing. As if I needed another hobby…. (Oh…. I also learned that “bisque” is pottery that’s only been fired once.)
