We’re not dead yet…
Having said howdy here I meandered inside just to check out the exhibits in the museum…
A little taken with the 1911 Model T; I haven’t gotten up close and personal with one in a few years and it was a little smaller than I remembered (or I’m a little bigger than I realized…). I stayed there until I had the shot I wanted (people don’t look to see who might be standing waiting, so it can take a while. I’ve learned patience.) and then headed into the Duncan General Store.
It’s not actually a store, it’s a recreation of the old Duncan Store from Wharton County. Much of the merchandise is authentic, either from the Duncan store or from an old Houston establishment, Askew Drug. It’s a nice slice of Things-As-They-Were if that sort of thing interests you.
Ladies’ (and men’s) wear department. Hats, boots, and several bolts of cloth, plus needles and thread. Some Assembly Required. For the well-to-do I’m pretty sure there are a couple of sewing machines on that right-hand shelf.
Hardware and sporting goods. Hammers, hatchets, toolboxes, candle molds, duck decoys, and an out-of-place Coleman lantern. There’s a time machine here somewheres….
Scotch and Snake Oil, mostly. Probably a couple of things actually worked (aside from the cases of whisky, of course…)
And, of course, the Post Office…. back in the day, the heart and soul of the community. (Aside from the diner down the road, of course…)
About that point the phone rang and it was time to head back to the “real world.”
But there’s still at least SOMETHING to be worked with, so I shall try to pull myself out of this strange purple-black fog I’ve been living in and get back to it…
Onward and upward.
