Remembering Goliad
A small group stopped by another statue for another memorial, this one for the aforementioned Francita Alavez. SeƱora Alavez was the wife of a Mexican cavalry officer. She became known as the “Angel of Goliad,” as she hid a number of Texians before the massacre, and interceded with the Mexican commanders on behalf of others on several occasions. She’s the tall bronze lady in the back there. The two in front (Olga Gonzales and Rudy Ramirez) are among the 350 or so descendants I mentioned.
Next year about this time we’ll get to Goliad for the FIRST day of the re-enactment, and we’ll add a bit of a sidebar on Sra. Alavez then.
Should be quite a story.
Stick around.
